Budget Accommodation in Gay Brighton

Sunday, June 21st, 2009

We are a b&b without breakfast in gay Brighton.

Gay budget accommodation in gay Brighton. We are a b&b without breakfast in Brighton, not an hotel, not a guest house, just offering accommodation mainly for gay men.

We’re in Kemptown slap in the middle of the gay quarter, right opposite the Marine Tavern and only about 250 yards from the beach.

The Palace Pier with all its diversions is just around the corner, as are the Water World aquarium, the Royal Pavilion palace, the famous Lanes, the grungier Laines and the main shopping streets.

There are gay cafes, restaurants and shops all around us. Apart from the Marine Tavern, the small, but friendly, old-fashioned gay pub right across the road, there are three trendy gay bars at one end of the street and a raunchy one, a draggy one and a bearish one at the other. Most of the other gay watering holes of all types from staid to flamboyant are in very easy walking distance.

Our street is not noisy, though just off St James’s Street, “the gay highway”. But Brighton never sleeps. So, if you want to stay with us, just write us an e-mail or give us a call.

Accommodation in gay Brighton
We have no parking facilities, though there is street and garage parking. The parking garage is nearby.
You can get here very conveniently and cheaply by National Express bus. The terminus is only ten minutes’ walk away. The railway station is farther, but taxis in Brighton are not dear, say a fiver or so.

We have no facilities for pets, so leave those at home. Just make sure they are well looked after.

If you’d like to stay with us for a while, just send an e-mail (see link above, or contact page), asking if we can put you up at a certain time (at weekends for at least two nights, please). We’ll let you know “by return” whether we can or not.

We don’t go in for “service”. Of course, your bed will be made and your room will be cleaned daily, towels etc. are supplied and laundered every day, there are facilities for making tea and coffee in your room, as well as a bottle of water, but you will have to share a bathroom (with loo, bathtub, shower and wash basin) with two other guest rooms. The rooms are pleasant, the beds are comfortable and we are friendly folk who keep the house clean.

All the rooms have internet access. Of course they are light, airy and have central heating. There is also a washing machine you can use. Drying can be done up the road at the launderette.

But please note: we accept absolutely no responsibility for your possessions of any kind, so look after them carefully.

Brighton, and especially the Kemptown area, is renowned for its eateries, so we do not provide any meals. Most people don’t want to feel they have to get up for breakfast “just because it’s paid for”. The gay White Horse tavern in Camelford Street (two streets round the corner) does a full English breakfast for £2.50.

For the other meals there is an unusually interesting variety of restaurants and take-aways all around us, from cheap to expensive, offering everything from junk food to pub grub, from wholesome homely to exotic fare. This is Brighton after all. Sin City, maybe, but Fun City for sure.

Incidentally, we have two iron rules:
No smoking in the house,
No sex between hosts and guests.

Local Attractions:
Brighton was a fishing village chosen by the Prince Regent, known to his friends as Prinny, son of George III and himself later King George IV, as his holiday resort not too far from London.

It was here he could keep his mistress, Maria Fitzherbert, without facing the prudish sniggers of the courtiers in London. It was here he could also meet other free spirits like himself, as well as the ladies, and perhaps even men, who knows, that were his and their camp followers.

It must have been a bumpy ride in those carriages, though, so the royal bottom and the portly frame needed resting after arrival. One does tend to linger a bit longer in Brighton, given the chance. Who knows what might happen this very afternoon? Prinny thought so too.

Well, fishing villages are fine and dandy, but Prinny wanted regal appointments, so the Royal Pavilion was built, Indian in style outside, Chinese inside. But all of it in the exquisite taste of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, known as “Regency”. Who would want to live anywhere else? Brighton was where it was at! Not to miss the fun the Court came along. Sunshine, sea and fresh air, what a change!

The important thing was, nobody was pointing fingers at anyone else. They were all enjoying the fun and hoping for a bit of “mixed bathing”, among other delights! Well, bathing costumes had not yet been invented, so the bathing was in the altogether. Get with it !

Queen Victoria, though no prude, sold the palace because she found everything here too hedonistic. Well, that just means pleasure-loving, doesn’t it? Better than pain-loving. Sorry! – OK, don’t want to tread on anyone’s toes.

The Theatre Royal:

Now some 200 years old, this elegant theatre maintains London standards,
and often presents plays waiting for transfer to London’s West End.
The Piers:

The West Pier burnt down a few years ago,

the Brighton Pier,

the erstwhile Palace Pier, now offers all the fun of the fair, but also hosts various events.

Fun on the beach: We know what you are thinking, and that does happen, too. But Brighton also provides world-class events, such as concerts by famous singers and bands, that you can enjoy on the beach.

Brighton’s Gay Pride week takes place twice a year. Regard it as good fun for everyone, and the excesses won’t bother you too much.
